Who we are

We are two Nigerian mothers—lifelong writers and readers—who welcomed our children in 2024. We chose a screen-free start (WHO guidance), even as we watched toddlers around us pulled into fast, dopamine-driven videos and away from the slow magic of books and play.

At the same time, reading culture is shrinking. And as publishers, we’ve seen how access and cost keep many families from books—UK children can borrow twenty books a week; most Nigerian children have access to none. Stories shouldn’t be a privilege.

Why Karanta

Karanta (from the Hausa word for “to read”) is a calm digital library and learning hub for African children ages 3–12. It turns screen time into productive time with stories, read-alouds, reflective quizzes, and creative prompts—designed to build curiosity, creativity, and resilience.

Beyond digital wellbeing, Karanta breaks cost and access barriers. One affordable subscription unlocks stories with offline access and a multilingual roadmap, thus reimagining a representative library.

Karanta is a bridge between the ancient power of storytelling and the digital future our children will inherit.
